Anti-Christian Violence on the Increase in East Africa

Added 23 October 2013

Violent attacks on Christians and their property are becoming increasingly common in Kenya and Tanzania. Indeed Tanzania is now in 24th position in Open Doors's list of the most difficult countries for Christians to live in, due to the number of serious attacks which have occurred during the last year. The homes of two pastors were recently targeted with one of them suffering serious cuts to his hands and arms as he defended himself against machete-wielding radical Muslims who broke into his home. Assailants broke into the home of the other pastor two nights earlier but were frightened away by his dogs. These incidents follow attacks in Arusha during which one priest was murdered and a church building destroyed. On a number of occasions gunfire was heard in the streets but the police were able to stabilise the situation. Other incidents have happened in Dar and Zanzibar. It is thought that these attacks have been carried out by sympathisers of al-Shabaab, the Islamist group that until recently controlled large parts of Somalia. Please pray that the church may be strengthened against what appears to be a long term threat and that Almighty God will disrupt the terrorist networks and bring peace to the country of Tanzania.
